keeping a side job back home?

How does one get by on an assistant salary? And what about babysitting, tutoring, etc? Tricks and tips for making it on little cash.

keeping a side job back home?

Postby emg » Sat Nov 21, 2009 5:44 pm

Hello all,

I am applying to the assistantship program for this coming year. I've wanted to do it for the past year and a half, but I wasn't able to apply last year.

It seems from this forum that many people take second jobs tutoring and such, so the possibility of a part time side job seems feasible. Well I work in a field that allows me to telecommute. So I was wondering if any US applicants have tried keeping a part time telecommuting position back home? I don't even know if it would be possible for me to do, as I'd obviously have to ask, and I wouldn't do that unless I get accepted as an assistant. But I figure the time difference would make it easy for me to work as an evening/night job maybe twice a week.

To go along with this question, I was wondering if typically assistants find housing with internet access?

Thanks!

There's an assistant in my town who works still for a company in the US. She did get the internet on in her place asap (private housing). Don't think she asked "permission" to do it, but don't think it really affects her work etc here.

Yes, that's what I'd be looking at as far as the job - I don't think what I would be doing would affect my work as an assistant.

I still do work for my office back home. My contact person knows about it, but just because I like her and we chat about things. Other than that, I see no need to try to ask the rectorat for permission or anything - as far as I'm concerned, it's none of their business!

The only thing you might want to be aware of is a lot of housing places don't provide you with internet. So, in my situation, for example, we went a month before we got online. Some of my friends still don't have internet because they're still waiting, and others will never get it because it's not possible in their logement. So, it's something to consider!
